PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Salary to be commensurate with experience
The hiring range for this position is $134,502.01 - $168,127.52/annually

The City of Aurora will conduct ongoing screenings of applications on a first-come-first-serve basis; as soon as we determine to have a qualified pool of applicants, this position may close quickly and without notice. 

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Public Defender’s Office represents indigent clients accused of ordinance violations occurring in the City, in cases where the charged offense carries a possible jail sentence.

At the direction of the Chief Public Defender, the Chief Deputy Public Defender supervises Deputy Public Defenders and others, works closely with the management team and provides direct representation to clients. All Public Defenders are expected to provide competent, diligent, and effective representation in accordance with state and federal constitutions, established court procedures, and the code of professional conduct. To further the mission of the office, this requires advocating, protecting and defending clients from arraignment through trial or disposition, in postconviction proceedings and on appeal.

This position is not a Career Service position; employee works at the pleasure of Public Defender’s Commission and has no Career Service rights.
